Facebook website suffered 20 minutes of downtime, mobile app and website were still running – TechCrunch

People on Twitter are complaining that Facebook has been down for about 10 minutes at the time of writing. Many TechCrunch editors could confirm the problem. However, the mobile app and website are still working.

Other websites are also having problems today. GitHub, for example, has experienced some downtime, but the two outages are likely unrelated. As Facebook.com is not responding or sending a standard error message, Facebook could be to blame. In particular, if the mobile apps and websites are still working, it could mean that there was an error while executing the code for the desktop website.

Facebook is known to roll out multiple updates per day, constantly iterating on its social network. An issue in a recent update may affect users right now, only in certain areas where new code is available.

Update: It seems that the website is slowly coming back, with users being able to gradually load it again. The outage affected Facebook users for around 20 minutes. We have reached out to Facebook for comment and will update this article when we know more.

Update # 2: Here is the official statement from Facebook.

Earlier today, an issue in our routing layer of service prevented some users from accessing the site for a brief period. We quickly identified the problem and are now back to 100%. We apologize for any inconvenience.
