The interrogation of the accused in the Elanthoor double human sacrifice case continues at Ernakulam Police Club. On Friday, police will collect evidence from the shop where the main defendant, Mohammad Shafi, had pawned the murdered Padmam’s gold. Shafi had collected Rs 1.1 lakh rupees after pledging 39 grams of gold belonging to Padmam.

The investigation team is also expected to collect more evidence against the second defendant, Laila, and the third defendant, Bhagaval Singh. The investigation team informed that the collection of evidence will help during the interrogation. A parallel investigation is underway to find out if Shafi victimized more women.
Investigators are faced with the problem of defendants constantly changing their statements. Contrary to earlier claims that they consumed the flesh of their victims, Laila and Bhagaval now say they did not. They denied the claim when questioned by reporters as they were being released from Kakkanad prison to face trial.

Meanwhile, Shafi’s fake Facebook account has been recovered. Law enforcement sources said they recovered conversations spanning three years between Bhagaval and Sridevi, the fake Facebook user Shafi allegedly created to plan the human sacrifice. The conversation between the two spans 100 pages. Investigations so far have revealed that Bhagaval blindly believed in the “invisible lover” named Sridevi.
The conversations reportedly revealed how Sridevi aka Shafi – taking advantage of the Bhagava’s belief in astrology and medicine – convinced him that an “enlightened person” would solve his financial problems. She passed the person’s number to Bhagaval. This person was allegedly Shafi himself. According to police sources, Bhagaval and Laila were devastated when they learned during interrogation that Sridevi and the “enlightened person” were one person – Shafi.
Of note, a special investigation team is investigating the shocking case. Kochi City Police Deputy Commissioner S Sasidharan leads the SIT, which also includes Perumbavoor ASP Anuj Paliwal as Chief Investigator. Ernakulam Central Deputy Commissioner C Jayakumar, Kadavantra Station House Officer Biju Jose and Kaladi Station House Officer Anoop NA are the investigators.
